The Sounds in Silence 2014 in Maine

The theme of the 2014 New England Retreat is Sounds from the Deep: A Voyage of Listening and Learning.

We invite you to take time this summer to notice your listening and tune into the sounds around you.

It’s 5:30 am in Newagen. The sun already shining and everything is wet with dew.

It sounds like silence when I walk out onto the deck.

Quiet and still.

But listening more closely, paying attention to what is there instead of what it not, I hear

the crash of waves on the west shore of the island

the rustle of feathers of the crow coming to the bird feeder

the Song Sparrow’s call from across the road

the buzz of a bee visiting the blossoms on the crab apple tree

the drone of a boat’s engine in the harbor

The morning is awash in sounds against a backdrop of silence.

I'm so ready for Summer! 2014 Retreat

It's been so cold for so long that it's hard to imagine summer!

In February, we start planning and publicizing the 2014 New England retreat. Every time I look at the photos from our past retreats, I can feel the warmth of the sun on my shoulders, feel the ocean breeze on my skin, and remember the hugs, tears and laughter that we shared. All that warmth is keeping me going through these chilly March days.

The faculty/alumni retreats are a special treat for me. They are chances to be a peer member of the Georgetown coaching community. I didn't go through the program, so don't have a cohort to call my own. I've been on the faculty for about 10 years, which often puts my in a role of instructing, coaching, assessing, or advising others.  At the retreats, I can just be one of the crowd for most of the time. Yes, I welcome you to my Maine home, and plan and deliver a workshop. But I also participate fully in the other workshops, learning right along with everyone else. I gather with you around a table or in the bar getting to know who you are and what you care about. In the mornings, I just sit outside, looking over the harbor, with my knitting in hand, enjoying the quiet and peace of Newagen.

I hope these retreats also give you a chance to be something different in this magical Georgetown community. Maybe you'll get to lead, when you are usually following. Maybe you can spend time in a small group, when you are usually working alone. Maybe you have a chance to be silent and reflective, when you are usually hectic and driven.

Imagine what's possible when you travel to the end of an island, with people you're sure to love, for a few days of retreat.

I hope you'll join us this year.
